Overview
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw to the skull. Problems with the joint or the muscles around it can cause jaw discomfort, clicking, or limited movement. Dr. Burns's training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics includes how the teeth, bite, and jaws work together.
Who may benefit
Patients with jaw discomfort, clicking or popping, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, or a bite that feels uneven may benefit from an evaluation. TMJ symptoms have many possible causes, and Dr. Burns will discuss whether orthodontic or other care may help or whether another provider is better placed to help.
The general process
- A consultation to discuss your symptoms
- An examination of the bite, jaw movement, and jaw joints
- A discussion of possible approaches, which may include orthodontic care, appliances, or referral
- Follow-up visits as needed
Benefits and practical considerations
TMJ problems vary widely, and no single approach works for everyone. Dr. Burns will be clear about what can and cannot be expected from treatment.
